Direct Support Professional – Mentor / Caregiver / Associate

Job Responsibilities

As a Direct Support Professional, you will play a direct care role, helping individuals with severe developmental disabilities to learn skills of daily living. This can include providing training and assistance with self-care, hygiene, meal preparation, housekeeping, and doing laundry.

Your specific duties in this DSP role include:

Engaging in socialization and recreation activities
Ensuring the appropriate use of public transportation to work sites and recreation activities
Collecting documentation and filing data as required
Attending scheduled staff meetings
Communicating professionally with individuals being served, co-workers, and outside-agency personnel
Ensuring that participants are engaged, active, and involved according to scheduled plans
Maintaining familiarity with individualized behavior programs and implementing them accordingly
Reinforcing the positive behavior of participants according to individual needs
Driving agency vehicles as directed
Completing 120 hours of initial orientation training in topics including:

Introduction to Intellectual Disabilities
Human Rights
Abuse/Neglect & Exploitation
First Aid
Ensuring the Rights of the Individual
Non-Violent Crisis Interventions
Community Integration

Job Requirements

We are looking for Direct Support Professionals who have a big heart and a strong and clearly evident passion for helping people. In addition to a friendly and empathetic nature, you must also have the ability to keep up on your paperwork and to complete all required documentation in a timely and accurate manner. It is also important that you display excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, plus the ability to interact effectively with individuals being served as well as their families and guardians.

Specific qualifications for the DSP role include:

U.S. high school diploma or GED, or educational evaluation by an approved and licensed agency if you were educated outside of the United States
Minimum 21 years of age
Reliable transportation
Valid driver’s license and good driving record
Ability to pass a background check, to include criminal background, finger prints, DCFS CANTS (Abuse and Neglect Tracking System), education credentials, and references
Ability to pass the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education)
Ability to complete 3 weeks of paid training, Monday – Friday, 8am-4pm the first week and a half following hire
